How Art Stops Urban Decay

When Paducah, Kentucky needed to save its downtown area from turning into a crime-ridden sinkhole of drugs and debauchery, they had a brilliant idea…pay artists to move there.

This is a story of how Paducah, and other cities like it, are partnering with artists to create safer neighborhoods, more beautiful streets, and wealthier cities. At the same time, the artists are enriched as well.

Paducah went from the verge of disaster to becoming a thriving regional art mecca in less than a decade. While US Senators call the Arts a waste of money that doesn’t produce jobs, and the National Endowment for the Arts is at its lowest level of funding in decades, this is an important discussion to have.
