A Short History of, and Optimistic Future for, Direct Democracy


Ever since the invention of the first computer networks, techie types have had a dream of direct democracy: bypass the politicians and just have the people directly control government. Spammers and flamers are just two reasons why this has failed – in this talk I’ll cover these and a few more reasons for failure. And then I’ll outline my optimism for the future of direct democracy including the local Portland DemocracyLab project.
